WHAT IS HALLOWEEN?
Halloween, a contraction of All Hallows’ Eve, is an occasion observed on October 31, the evening before All Saints’ (or All Hallows’) Day. The celebration marks the day before the Western Christian feast of All Saints and starts the season of Allhallowtide, which lasts three days and concludes with All Souls’ Day.
Why do we Celebrate Halloween?
Halloween was initially a Celtic celebration called Samhain. The occasion was celebrated in Ireland and Scotland for centuries.
Samhain marked the end of summer and the start of winter. Celts would build campfires to check the alter of seasons and tell each other stories, wear creature parts as costumes and give up animals.
The tradition eventually combined itself with the Roman celebrations of Pomona and Feralia celebrated the dead and the goddess of trees and fruit respectively. It is accepted that “bobbing apples” became a tradition related to Halloween as the image for Pomona is an apple.
